Moffitt Cancer Center

Friends-4-Cures is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for cancer research with an emphasis in testicular cancer. Benson Walker Campbell IV, brother of tournament founder, Shannon Campbell Mahaffey, is a Testicular Cancer Survivor, and that good news is the direct result of the ground breaking research of Dr. Lawrence Einhorn of Indiana University Cancer Center.

Benson received his diagnosis of cancer in October 2002. Courage, tenacity, a positive outlook and unwavering support from family and friends helped Benson as he went through rigorous chemotherapy and an extensive and delicate surgery.

Dr. Lawrence Einhorn rewrote medical history in 1974 with a curative chemotherapeutic regimen for treatment of most forms of testicular cancer. Friends-4-Cures gratefully acknowledges Dr. Einhorn and his role in Benson’s recovery. We likewise recognize Dr. Richard Foster of Indiana University Cancer Center for his part in Benson’s recovery. These two men have the distinction of being the world’s foremost authorities on the chemotherapeutic and surgical treatment of testicular cancer.

Young men still lose their lives to certain forms of testicular cancer and to late life relapses. This reality inspires Friends-4-Cures commitment.

The Friends-4-Cures family considers it a privilege to be able to express their profound gratitude through raising funds to further cancer research.

Rob Wolfson, Operations Manager for the Mahaffey Apartment Company, began his career with the Mahaffey family in February 1987. After Tom and Shannon Mahaffey married, Rob learned of Shannon’s brother’s battle with testicular cancer. He further discovered Shannon’s family sponsored a golf tournament in Kentucky as a fund-raiser for Friends-4-Cures.

Rob believed a charity golf tournament would be a great opportunity for him to utilize the Mahaffey Company’s many business connections. It was decided to hold this tournament in St. Petersburg to benefit Friends-4-Cures and bring together many of our vendors and employees for a fun day. The Mahaffey Company has hosted this tournament since 2006 and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for cancer research organizations.

Ironically, in April of 2015, Rob’s youngest son, while living in San Francisco, was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Determined not to let his son fight this battle alone far away from home, Rob immediately called Shannon who contacted Amber Kleopfer Senseny, Dr. Lawrence Einhorn’s assistant at IU.

Two days after returning home, his son had an appointment with Dr. Wade Sexton and Dr. Mayer Fishman at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Surgery followed two days later. The desired outcome from the surgery to resolve the issue was not accomplished, so he began chemo treatments 2 months later. Dr. Einhorn was instrumental in the determination of the best treatment plan with the Moffit team for him.

Due to the successful treatment of his cancer, Moffitt Cancer Center has become a second beneficiary of the proceeds from the Mahaffey Screen Door Open. As of today, Rob’s son has been cancer free since 2015.

We want to help create more success stories such as Benson’s and Wolfson’s. Thank you for your participation in this event to raise funds for further research for the cure for all forms of cancer. We look forward to seeing you on the golf course.
